Have you ever wondered why there are certain places you go, certain things you may do, or certain thoughts you may have that can put you right into a joyful mood?
We feel joy in our bodies when there is a release of dopamine and serotonin, two types of neurotransmitters in the brain. Both of these chemicals are heavily associated with happiness, and that is what takes place when you get these “bursts” of joy.
As a mom and business coach, I not only need to start my day with joy – but need to fill my bucket back up with as much “joy bursts” as I can each day. So how do I do that? After years of research, experience and coaching others, I found there are 3 quick ways that one can do this in their daily setting. Today I share with you one of them:
- Wake up with Gratitude and Pass it on!
Before you reach for that phone, jump out of your bed, or hop into that shower – say a Big Thanks {preferably out loud} for another day to be ALIVE. Keep a Gratitude Journal at your bedside and write down all the things you are grateful for. Some ideas of what I write are thanks for my health, body parts, home and bed, water {especially hot water on cold days}, my appliances that make my life easier, my family and their health and happiness, my car, teachers and our healthcare system, or whatever it is that reminds me I have a lot to be grateful for.
Writing a note, letter or sending a card to someone is another great way to show gratitude. Did you know that many studies show people who find gratitude in their life are much happier and less depressed? But even greater than that was a study done at The University of Berkley, that shared gratitude writing can be beneficial not just for healthy, well-adjusted individuals, but also for those who struggle with mental health.
Therefore, everyone is able to “spark joy” in their day with just gratitude. I have definitely seen the difference when my children and clients choose to make this a habit. It is like a magic pill. It is simple, easy and doesn’t have to cost anything. Plus, you may just “spark joy” in someone else’s life with a simple note or card.
So if you are struggling to find joy in your day, or need a “burst” of it to get you through the day, then start by waking up with thoughts of gratitude, journaling, or writing a letter to someone – and you will likely “spark joy” back into your day!
